A Family-Friendly Weekend Guide to Branson, Missouri

Looking for an easy family weekend getaway in the Midwest? Branson surprised us in the best way. Between live entertainment, delicious restaurants, shopping, and one of the country’s most unique theme parks, it’s a destination that grandparents and young children alike can enjoy together. If you’re planning a two- or three-day trip, here’s exactly how we spent our weekend.

In April, shortly after my father-in-law received his confirmed diagnosis, we took a last-minute trip to Branson, Missouri, with my in-laws, brother-in-law, sister-in-law, and nephews. We chose Branson because my father-in-law wanted to spend the weekend watching his grandsons play and listening to them laugh. It was only a five-hour drive from home, making it the perfect destination to plan just a few days in advance.

We stayed at the Hilton Promenade at Branson Landing, and I can’t imagine a better location. Branson Landing is home to more than 100 shops, restaurants, and attractions, all within walking distance of the hotel. We rarely needed to move our vehicles once we arrived.

The Hilton Promenade offers a nearby parking garage for $22 per day or valet parking for $32 per day. Both options were incredibly convenient and made coming and going easy throughout the weekend.

From our hotel room, we had a view of Downtown Branson and the many locally owned shops and businesses nearby. My in-laws’ room overlooked the Branson Landing Fountain, where we could watch the evening fountain show along the river after the sun went down. It was a beautiful way to end the day.

Just around the corner from the hotel is Paula Deen’s Family Kitchen. Since it’s served family-style, it was the perfect choice for our group of ten. There were so many delicious options, but some of our favorites included the fried chicken, beef pot roast, chicken and dumplings, and Southern fried fish. The sides were just as impressive, with macaroni and cheese, green beans, mashed potatoes, candied yams, and more. It was exactly the comforting meal we needed after a long day of traveling.

After dinner, we headed to Presley’s Country Jubilee. This family-owned show has been entertaining audiences since 1967 and features an incredible blend of comedy, country, bluegrass, and gospel music. They even host a church service on Sundays. Everyone in our group enjoyed the performance, from the grandparents to our youngest audience member, who was only three years old.

The next morning, we started our day with breakfast at Gettin’ Basted. They had only been serving breakfast for a couple of weeks during our visit, and it quickly became one of our favorite meals of the trip. We ordered everything from pancakes and breakfast tacos to their peach-glazed burnt ends. It was the perfect way to fuel up before spending the day at Silver Dollar City.

Nestled in the Ozark Mountains, Silver Dollar City is built around Marvel Cave, one of Missouri’s most fascinating natural attractions. We took the hour-long cave tour and highly recommend it if you’re comfortable descending nearly 500 feet underground. It’s filled with fascinating history, incredible views, and plenty of stairs, so be prepared for a workout on the climb through.

Once the park opened, we spent the entire day exploring. Silver Dollar City is themed after an 1880s Ozarks town and is filled with rides, unique shops, live entertainment, and my favorite feature—craftsmen demonstrating traditional trades. We watched taffy being made and glass being blown, but you can also visit a working blacksmith, pottery shop, and many other artisan demonstrations throughout the park.

Between rides and demonstrations, we took breaks in one of the theaters where live bands performed throughout the day. It became the perfect place for the little ones to nap while the adults relaxed with a snack. Of course, we couldn’t leave without trying the Fruity Pebbles funnel cake. It was delicious, but definitely large enough to share!

The park closed fairly early, giving us plenty of time to relax before dinner. We ate at Big Whiskey’s American Restaurant & Bar, conveniently located inside our hotel. After walking all day, we couldn’t have picked a better place to unwind. I still think about the peach mule and the shrimp po’ boy!

Before this trip, I assumed Branson was simply a town known for its shows. I quickly realized it’s so much more than that. Between Silver Dollar City, Branson Landing, incredible restaurants, live entertainment, and the welcoming atmosphere, it’s a destination that truly offers something for every generation.

Whether you’re planning a weekend with young children, grandparents, or the entire extended family, Branson makes slowing down and spending quality time together feel effortless. We came home with wonderful memories, and it’s already a place we’d happily return to.
